Coach Webb is in his fifth year as head men’s golf coach at the University of Tennessee. Before this, Coach Webb was the head coach at Middle Tennessee State University and assistant coach at Georgia Tech. During his own college days, Coach Webb also a standout player who helped East Tennessee State rise to #1 in the country. Before coaching, Coach Webb played pro for around 8 years and competed on various tours including the PGA Tour, Korn Ferry Tour, and Canadian Tour.
We asked Coach Webb about Caleb Surratt, one of Tennessee’s star freshmen, and what set him apart. He said that Caleb approaches the game like a professional and is very diligent about spending the time necessary to improve. It’s too early to predict things or make comparisons, but Patrick Grimes had a similar observation about his teammate, Maverick McNealy in Ep. 037.
One of the things that Coach Webb values about Tennessee is its competitiveness. On any given team, there are at least 7 top-notch players who could qualify, and all of them could play other places in the country and start. When he looks at recruits, he wants a player who can shoot the scores, but more than that, he wants a player that can take the challenge of not being the best player there and rise to that challenge.
